Why distance to the Haram is the first criterion
During an Umrah you will walk to the Grand Mosque several times a day, often five. Over a one- to two-week stay, the difference between 100 metres and a kilometre adds up to hours of walking, in a demanding climate. It is the criterion that transforms daily life the most — more than the star rating.
It weighs even heavier for families with children and for elderly or reduced-mobility pilgrims, for whom fatigue determines how many prayers are performed on site.
What each distance band changes in practice
Up to 200 metres, you are at the Haram's doorstep: returning between prayers stays easy, and a rest between two prayers is possible. Between 300 and 700 metres, expect a five- to ten-minute walk, very manageable for someone in good health, heavier with young children.
Beyond 800 metres to a kilometre, the walk becomes a decision: you go out less often, you chain prayers on site, and a shuttle or taxi enters the budget. That is not a bad choice — it is a deliberate trade-off in favour of price.

At equal budget, the choice is often between a higher-rated hotel farther away and a simpler property close to the Haram. For a first stay, for a family, or for elders, proximity almost always wins: you come to pray at the Haram, not to enjoy the room.
