Hijri calendar
March 2027 runs from Ramadan 1448 AH into Shawwal 1448 AH. Ramadan falls, at least in part, in March 2027.
Weather and crowds in March
March is warmer than February: the climate normals put Makkah at around 35 °C in the afternoon and 22 °C at night, and Madinah at around 31 °C by day and 17 °C at night. Rain is rare in both cities, and the air is much drier in Madinah than in Makkah. Pack light, breathable clothing and a thin layer for the evenings and the dawn prayer in Madinah. In the afternoon the sun is strong in the courtyards of the Haram: protect yourself from it, drink water regularly and, where you can, save long walks for the cooler hours.
In some years, March opens with the last nights of Ramadan, the nights that gather the largest congregations of the month at the Two Holy Mosques, followed by Eid al-Fitr, whose days are also very busy. The blessed month draws far more visitors than an ordinary month, so much so that the Saudi authorities have in the past advised pilgrims to avoid peak hours when performing Umrah during the last ten days. In other years, March falls entirely after Ramadan and Eid. Either way, all or part of the month can fall within the pause before Hajj: in recent seasons, entry for Umrah pilgrims from abroad closed about two weeks after Eid al-Fitr and only reopened after Hajj.
Who is an Umrah in March right for?
In years when March opens with the end of Ramadan, it suits those who want to experience the last nights of the blessed month and Eid al-Fitr in Makkah, accepting the crowds and the patience and flexibility it takes to reach the Haram; in those years, people with reduced mobility and families with young children should think twice. In other years, and provided the season calendar still allows pilgrims from abroad to enter, March offers a stay away from the Ramadan crowds and can suit a first Umrah or a family trip. Afternoons are hotter than in February, so older pilgrims and anyone sensitive to heat should pace themselves at those hours.
When to book for March?
In years when March opens with the end of Ramadan, book early: in Morocco, places on Ramadan trips are booked up months in advance and the hotels close to the Haram are the first to fill up; most bookings are made between September and December. In every case, check the Umrah season calendar, which the Saudi authorities set each season ahead of Hajj: it tells you whether pilgrims from abroad can still enter on the dates you have in mind.
