Performing Umrah while fasting: is it possible, and how to organise it

Wiki Tours International · Published on · Updated on

Yes, you can perform the Umrah rites while fasting, and millions of pilgrims do so every Ramadan. The question isn't feasibility but organisation: when you choose to do the tawaf and sa'i changes everything. Most groups perform the rites at night, after iftar, once the heat drops.

Performing Umrah while fasting: is it possible, and how to organise it

Can you perform Umrah while fasting?

Yes. Fasting does not prevent performing the rites, and Ramadan Umrah is precisely one of the most sought-after periods of the year. Millions of pilgrims complete the tawaf and sa'i while fasting every year.

The real question is when to perform them.

The best moment: after iftar

The tawaf (seven circuits of the Kaaba) and the sa'i (seven runs between Safa and Marwa) together represent a significant amount of walking. Doing that mid-afternoon, fasting and in the heat, is punishing — and unnecessary.

The vast majority of groups therefore perform the rites at night, after iftar and the Maghrib prayer, or later after Tarawih. The temperature has dropped, you have eaten and drunk, and your energy is back. That is what our guides recommend.

The other option: right after Fajr

Some prefer to perform the rites early in the morning, after Fajr, before the heat builds. It's a good alternative if night crowds put you off, but the night's fatigue shows and the fast then runs all day.

Staying well despite fasting

  • Hydrate heavily between iftar and suhoor: that's the window where you rebuild reserves for the whole next day.
  • Never skip suhoor: it's what carries you through the day.
  • Plan for afternoon fatigue: that's the time to stay at the hotel or sit at the Haram rather than walk.
  • Comfortable shoes: you cover a lot of ground on the Mataf and Mas'a.

If fasting becomes impossible

Travel itself opens a recognised dispensation, and those who are ill, elderly or frail are not held to fasting in these conditions. If that applies to you, consult your doctor before departure and flag it at registration: our team adapts the guidance, especially the pace of visits. Our article on vaccines and health complements this point.

Organising it with a guided group

This is where guidance makes the difference: our team sets the timing of the rites according to the group, the heat and the crowds, so nobody ends up doing a sa'i alone at three in the afternoon. Our Ramadan 2027 departures will appear on our Ramadan Umrah page.
