Phone and internet in Saudi Arabia: staying reachable during Umrah

Moroccan roaming works in Saudi Arabia but is expensive. The three realistic options are a local SIM bought at the airport, an eSIM activated before departure, or hotel wifi. In a group, staying reachable isn't a luxury: it's what stops you getting lost around the Haram.
Why it matters more than you'd think
Around the Grand Mosque at prayer times, hundreds of thousands move at once. Finding your group after being separated with no way to call is the most common — and most stressful — mishap of a stay.
Sorting the phone question before departure is not a comfort detail.
The three options
1. A local SIM. Saudi operators (STC, Mobily, Zain) sell tourist packages at airports and in the city. Often the best price-to-data ratio, but buying takes time on arrival and requires your passport.
2. An eSIM. If your phone supports it, you activate it before leaving Morocco and you're connected on landing, with no queue. Today this is the simplest option for a one- to two-week stay.
3. Moroccan roaming. It works, but at international rates. Keep it for short calls, unless your operator offers a travel add-on — check before you go, not after the first bill.
4. Wifi. Hotels provide it, and the Grand Mosque has a network. Fine for WhatsApp in the evening, not for staying reachable in a crowd.

- At least one active data line per family, not one for the whole group.
- Save your guide's number on day one, and have every member save it — including children with phones.
- Agree a fixed meeting point near your usual Haram entrance. The gates are numbered: remember yours. That's the real safety net when the network saturates at prayer times.
