Umrah or Hajj: what are the differences, and where to start?

What the two pilgrimages share

Umrah and Hajj lead to the same place — the Grand Mosque of Makkah — and share a core of rites: entering ihram before the miqat, tawaf (seven circuits of the Kaaba), sa'i between Safa and Marwa, then shaving or trimming the hair. Our Umrah glossary defines each of these terms.

The five real differences

1. Religious status. Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam: obligatory once in a lifetime for anyone physically and financially able. Umrah carries no such obligation — it remains a highly meritorious act, accessible at any point in life.
2. The calendar. Hajj takes place on fixed dates, around the 8th to 13th of Dhul-Hijjah, the twelfth Hijri month — the one that closes with Eid al-Adha. Umrah can be performed year-round: Rajab, Cha'ban, Ramadan, school holidays… each period has its character (see best period).
3. The additional rites. Hajj adds to Umrah's rites the standing at Arafat — its essential moment —, the night at Muzdalifah, the days of Mina with the stoning of the pillars, and the sacrifice. Umrah centres on tawaf and sa'i.
4. Duration of the rites. Umrah's rites are completed in a few hours; the stay (10 to 16 days in our programs) is devoted to prayer in the two holy mosques and visiting Madinah. Hajj rites stretch over five to six intense days.
5. Organization from Morocco. Umrah is booked directly with a licensed agency, all year round (see how to verify an agency). Hajj in Morocco goes through official registration and national quotas — places are limited and the wait can last years.

It can be booked within weeks, adapts to your budget through tier and room choice, and is precious preparation — you'll already know the places, the ihram, the tawaf and the rhythm of the two holy cities when your Hajj turn comes.
