Registering for Hajj in Morocco: the process step by step

Hajj from Morocco is not a booking. It is a yearly cycle that always runs in the same order: online registration, a draw, final lists and a waiting list, then confirmation, medical formalities and travel. Who organises Hajj in Morocco, and what are the two channels?

Hajj for Moroccans is organised under the authority of the Royal Hajj Commission, and there are two channels. The first is the official organisation, overseen by the Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs. The second runs through licensed travel agencies, selected by the Ministry of Tourism.

The rites are the same either way. What differs is the authority in charge, the level at which the draw is held, and who looks after you afterwards.

What are the conditions for registering?

Three conditions are announced: being 18 or older, not having performed Hajj within the last ten years, and being physically able to carry out the rites. Official announcements add that a woman more than six months pregnant cannot take part.

These conditions come back season after season, but their exact wording and the documents required are published by the Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs with each announcement. So the practical rule is simple: read the current announcement before you fill in the form, and do not rely on a past season or on what people around you remember.

The ten-year rule is the one that catches most people out. If you have already performed Hajj and are still inside that period, registration is not possible this season. Umrah stays open all year, with no draw and no registration window.

How does online registration work, and what should you prepare?

Registration for Hajj in Morocco is done online, during a window announced each year by the ministry. That window opens and closes on its own schedule, so preparation is what makes the difference. Someone who arrives with a complete file is finished quickly; someone chasing a missing document at the last minute can miss the whole season.

What is worth having ready before it opens:

1. A valid national identity card whose details match exactly what you will type in.
2. A phone number and an e-mail address you check yourself — notifications go there.
3. A valid passport, or its renewal file if it is close to expiring.
4. A decision already made on the channel: official organisation, or licensed travel agency.
5. An honest view of your physical condition, because Hajj is sustained effort over several days.

How is the draw run, and where are the lists published?

Once registration closes, the draw takes place. It sets the final lists of pilgrims and, alongside them, a waiting list used to replace those who withdraw. It is held at the level of caïdats and districts for pilgrims in the official organisation, and at the level of prefectures and provinces for those going through travel agencies. The ministry publishes the lists as soon as each operation ends.

What happens between the draw and the flight?

Once your name is on a list, a longer and calmer stretch begins. First comes confirmation with the body that handles you — the ministry for the official organisation, the licensed agency for the other channel: the file is completed and the amounts due are settled according to what that body announces.

Then come the medical formalities, whose nature and timing are announced by the body that supervises you. This is not administrative detail. Hajj is real physical effort, and only your doctor can rule on your own situation.

After that comes the briefing the organiser announces before travel: the rites explained, how the group is run, the practical instructions. Then the flight, the rites, the return. The road is long, but it is ordered, and each stage is announced in its own time.

What if your name is not drawn?

It happens, and it closes nothing. The waiting list exists, registration comes back the following season, and the ten-year rule only applies to those who have actually performed Hajj.

In the meantime Umrah is open all year and subject to no draw at all: it is arranged with a licensed agency and performed whenever suits you. Umrah is a rite of its own, not a substitute for Hajj, but it keeps the link with the two Holy Mosques alive.

Can I register if I performed Hajj about ten years ago?

The announced condition is not having performed Hajj within the last ten years. If your pilgrimage is older than that period, this condition does not block you; if it falls inside it, registration is not possible for this season. The current announcement published by the Ministry of Habous settles the borderline cases, so read it before you fill anything in.

How many times can I enter the draw?

The ministry is the only source on whether a maximum number of attempts exists. In practice, someone who is not selected one season registers again the next one, when the window reopens. What counts is meeting the conditions announced each season and doing the paperwork on time: do not assume a past registration carries over by itself.

Does it matter whether I register through the ministry or an agency?

Yes. The two channels differ in the authority that oversees them and in the level at which the draw is held: caïdats and districts for the official organisation, prefectures and provinces for travel agencies. It is a rite of its own, not a substitute for Hajj, but it keeps the link with the Holy Mosques alive while you wait for another season. Many Moroccans take that road after an unfavourable result.
