Umrah supplications (dua): what to recite at each step

Wiki Tours International · Published on · Updated on

There is no obligatory dua tied to each circuit of the tawaf: you are free to supplicate Allah in your own words. Only a few formulas are established by the Sunnah — the Talbiya in ihram, the dua between the Yemeni corner and the Black Stone, and the dhikr on Safa and Marwa. Here are the essentials, in Arabic, transliterated and translated.

A clarification that puts you at ease

Many pilgrims arrive anxious about "memorising all the dua." The truth is reassuring: no specific supplication is required for each circuit of the tawaf or sa'i. You may supplicate Allah in your own language and words. Only a few formulas are established by the Sunnah — here they are.

Entering ihram: the Talbiya

From the miqat, recite the Talbiya, repeating it often until the tawaf begins:

> Labbayka Allāhumma labbayk, labbayka lā sharīka laka labbayk, inna-l-hamda wa-n-ni'mata laka wa-l-mulk, lā sharīka lak.
>
> "Here I am, O Allah, here I am. You have no partner, here I am. Praise, blessing and dominion are Yours. You have no partner."

During the tawaf

- Facing the Black Stone at the start of each circuit: Bismillah, Allāhu akbar, touching or pointing to it without pushing (see the glossary).
- Between the Yemeni corner and the Black Stone, recite:
> Rabbanā ātinā fi-d-dunyā hasanah wa fi-l-ākhirati hasanah wa qinā 'adhāba-n-nār.
>
> "Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire."
- Elsewhere in the tawaf: any supplication, dhikr or Quran recitation you choose.

During the sa'i, on Safa and Marwa

Ascending Safa, recite the verse "Inna-s-Safā wa-l-Marwata min sha'ā'iri-Llāh," then face the Kaaba, say Allāhu akbar three times, and supplicate freely. Repeat on Marwa. Between them, ask for whatever you wish.

After the Umrah

No formula is required to close. Thank Allah, ask for acceptance (taqabbal Allāh), and make dua for your loved ones. For the full sequence of rites see our rites of Umrah chapter, and the glossary for each term.

The essence: the heart matters more than the perfection of the wording. Supplicate sincerely — that is the spirit of the Umrah Wiki Tours International supports from Morocco.
