The Umrah rites, step by step

1. Ihram — before the miqat

The pilgrim enters the sacred state before crossing the miqat. In practice, on a flight from Casablanca, you prepare at the airport or on board before the miqat announcement. Men wear two unstitched white garments; women their usual modest clothing. Make the intention for Umrah, then repeat the talbiyah: "Labbayka Allahumma labbayk…".

Forbidden while in ihram, among other things: perfume, cutting hair or nails, and for men stitched clothing and covering the head.

2. Tawaf — seven circuits of the Kaaba

At the Grand Mosque, perform seven circuits around the Kaaba, starting in line with the Black Stone, Kaaba on your left. The talbiyah stops when tawaf begins. After the seventh circuit, pray two rakaat behind the Station of Ibrahim if the crowd allows, then drink Zamzam water.

3. Sa'i — between Safa and Marwah

Sa'i is seven laps between Safa and Marwah inside the mosque (each direction counts as one), starting at Safa and ending at Marwah, in memory of Hajar.

4. Halq or taqsir — leaving ihram

Men shave the head (halq, preferred) or trim their hair (taqsir); women cut a fingertip's length. The Umrah is then complete and the ihram restrictions lifted.
