What changed
Historically, a woman needed a mahram (husband or close relative) to obtain an Umrah visa. As part of Saudi Arabia's reforms (Vision 2030), this requirement was lifted in late 2021: an adult woman can now apply for a visa and perform Umrah without a mahram.
What it means in practice
- An adult woman can travel alone, with friends or with family, without a male companion.
- Escorted group travel through a licensed agency remains what we recommend: male and female guidance on site, organized transfers, hotels near the Haram and continuous assistance — precious for a first pilgrimage.
