Ramadan Umrah: what the month in Makkah is really like
By Yahya Houssini · Published on · Updated on
The rites of Umrah do not change during Ramadan: ihram, tawaf, sa'i, then shaving or trimming. What changes is the rhythm: a whole day built around the hour of iftar, nights stretched long by tarawih and qiyam. This first part explains the month itself, then walks through a full day, hour by hour.
In Makkah, Ramadan is not an ordinary Umrah that happens to fall in a blessed month. The rites do not move — ihram, tawaf, sa'i, then shaving or trimming — but everything around them does: the whole day is built around the hour of iftar, and the night stretches from isha through tarawih to qiyam. This is part one of a twelve-part guide published by Wiki Tours International (Bab Makka), a licensed Moroccan travel agency in Casablanca (licence ODV-25012) that has accompanied pilgrims since 2016. Its aim is simple: to tell you what waits for you, before you decide.
The short version
- The rites of Umrah are the same in Ramadan as in any other month: nothing is added, nothing removed.
- What changes is the spread of worship across the night: isha, then tarawih, then qiyam in the last third.
- The last ten nights are the summit of the month, with i'tikaf and the search for Laylat al-Qadr.
- Every one of our groups gathers at Mohammed V airport in Casablanca.
- The durations on offer today are stays of eight or fifteen days.
What exactly is Ramadan Umrah, and why is it different?
Umrah is a pilgrimage to Makkah that can be performed at any time of the year, unlike Hajj, which is tied to fixed days. It begins with ihram taken at the miqat, continues with tawaf around the Kaaba and sa'i between Safa and Marwah, and ends with shaving or trimming the hair. In Ramadan that sequence does not change at all.
What changes is the container. You are fasting. The question of the crowds — what they cost you in time, and how they are handled — has its own answer further down this article. The night becomes the main space for worship: isha, then tarawih, then qiyam in the last third for those with the strength.
On the merit of the month, a hadith reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim carries the meaning that an Umrah performed in Ramadan equals a Hajj. The point concerns reward: Umrah does not discharge the obligation of Hajj and does not replace it. For the legal detail of that question, the reference is the people of knowledge, not a travel company.
In practice, a Ramadan Umrah is planned differently: the group you join, how you organise sleep, the distance you accept to walk each day, and the patience the crowds demand. The parts that follow take each of those points on its own.
When does Ramadan begin, and how do you follow its days?
The Hijri calendar is lunar, so the month moves forward each year against the Gregorian one. And its first day is not settled by calculation alone: it is established by sighting the moon, with the calculation giving an estimate that comes close before the official announcement.
That is why no date is written into this text. The counter below computes it from the Umm al-Qura calendar and carries the same caveat:
Start of Ramadan: February 8, 2027, in 136 days(subject to the sighting of the moon · computed dates (Umm al-Qura), may move by two days)
In practice, what matters to a pilgrim is less the first day than where in the month they stand: the opening days, the middle, or the last ten nights. Each third has its own character, and the guide chapter on periods takes the question head on: choosing your period.
What does a Ramadan day in Makkah look like?
The day there is inverted compared with the one you know at home: the night is for worship and movement, the daytime for recovering and saving your strength. Here is the general order, with no clock times, because the hours shift with the month and with where your hotel sits:
| Moment | What our groups observe around the Haram | What it asks of you |
|---|---|---|
| Suhoor | Hotels and restaurants are working, the streets toward the Haram already fill | A light meal and enough water |
| Fajr | The mosque is full long before the iqama | Leave early, fix a gate to come back to |
| After fajr | Relative calm, a few pilgrims make their tawaf | This is where the real sleep happens |
| Dhuhr and asr | Moderate movement | Walk little, spare your legs |
| Before maghrib | The iftar cloths spread across the courtyards and walkways | Arrive well ahead, sit with your group |
| Isha and tarawih | The peak of the day, by a distance | Patience, and an agreed meeting point |
| Last third of the night | Qiyam and tahajjud, rising numbers in the final ten nights | An honest read of your own fitness |
That rhythm weighs heaviest on older parents and on children, and we gave them an article of their own: travelling with elderly parents or children. Here one rule is enough: whoever sleeps by day lives the night; whoever stays up by day loses it.
What changes inside the Sacred Mosque during Ramadan?
First, flow management. When the mataf approaches capacity, worshippers are directed to the upper floors and the roof, and groups are organised on the way in and on the way out — this is what is called tafwij. Our group leaders describe tawaf on the upper level as longer in distance but calmer, and say many pilgrims prefer it at the busiest hours.
Second, permits. Visiting the Rawdah at the Prophet's Mosque goes through the Nusuk app, and any other permit the authorities require during the month is issued through that same official channel. The practical rule: never go through an unofficial middleman, and ask your group leader what is required well before you travel.
Third, the last ten nights. I'tikaf takes over whole areas of the mosque, and the odd nights draw worshippers seeking Laylat al-Qadr. That stretch calls for a completely different plan from the rest of the month, and it now has an article of its own: the last ten days of Ramadan.
Should you stay the whole month, or is part of it enough?
The question is a fair one and has no single answer: it depends on the leave you have, on your physical condition, and on which third of the month you are aiming for. The durations on offer today are stays of eight or fifteen days, and choosing between them rests on those criteria rather than on wishes alone. The comparison of the two durations is handled separately: eight days or fifteen; the decision calendar itself is there: when to book.

How do you use this guide? The map of the twelve parts
This first part draws the overall picture; the ones that follow go into the detail, one at a time: booking and price in Ramadan, then Laylat al-Qadr and the last ten nights, i'tikaf at the Haram, fasting while travelling and the rukhsa, suhoor and iftar, tarawih, Nusuk permits, how far the hotel sits, elderly parents and children and women, health and the body's rhythm, and finally Eid al-Fitr with what comes after.
Two of those questions already have a page of their own: booking is covered in when to book a Ramadan Umrah, and the last ten nights in the article linked above.

Frequently asked questions
Does an Umrah in Ramadan really equal a Hajj?
The hadith reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim speaks of an equivalence in reward. It is not a legal equivalence: Umrah does not discharge the obligation of Hajj and does not stand in its place. Whoever owes Hajj still owes it. For the detail of that question, the reference is the people of knowledge, and not a travel company.
How many times can you perform Umrah during Ramadan?
The programme you book is generally built around one Umrah. Repeating it within the same trip is a question for the people of knowledge and for your group leader. In practice, it is he who will tell you what a single tawaf and a single sa'i really cost in time during this month; many pilgrims would rather perform one well than wear themselves out.
How do you know when Ramadan starts?
The start is established by sighting the moon and is confirmed by an official announcement. Astronomical calculation, which is what the counter in this article uses, gives an estimate that comes close a few days ahead. The rule for a traveller: book on the estimate, allow a day or two either way, and follow the official announcement before you fly.
Is the Haram really that crowded in Ramadan?
That is what our group leaders report, departure after departure: the Haram is far busier than in the rest of the year. They place the densest moments just before iftar, then during isha and tarawih, and higher still in the final ten nights and on the odd nights. They handle them by leaving early, by choosing the upper floors for tawaf, and by agreeing with the group on a gate and a time to meet.
What is the difference between Umrah in Ramadan and in Rajab or Shaban?
The rites are identical in all three; the setting is what differs. Rajab and Shaban are quieter, moving around is easier, and the time spent on tawaf and sa'i is shorter. Ramadan gives far longer nights of worship, against a higher physical load and the crowds described above. The choice follows your own situation, not a general rule.
Where do the Ramadan trips leave from?
All our groups gather at Mohammed V airport in Casablanca, the meeting point on the day of travel. Pilgrims coming from Rabat, Marrakech, Fez, Tangier, Agadir, Meknes or Oujda join at the airport directly. The contract itself is signed at our Casablanca office, and the rest of the file is arranged by WhatsApp or by phone.
